How to convert a PDF comic for an e-reader

PDF is the most common way comics are shared, and the most frustrating to read on an e-reader out of the box. The problem is baked into the format — but it's easy to fix by converting.

Why PDF comics look small

A PDF has fixed page dimensions. A comic PDF is usually sized for a large screen or print, so when your e-reader shrinks each page to fit its smaller display, the artwork and lettering shrink with it. The device can't reflow a comic PDF the way it reflows a novel, because each page is one fixed image. That's why you end up zooming and panning.

Option 1: convert to CBZ or EPUB

The cleanest fix is to extract the pages from the PDF and repackage them as CBZ (for comic apps) or fixed-layout EPUB (for the Kindle/Kobo/Boox library). This also lets you apply panel-by-panel splitting and grayscale optimization at the same time. Upload the PDF, choose your device and output format, and you get a file built for your screen.

Option 2: a screen-fitted PDF

If you prefer to keep PDF, convert it to a new PDF rendered at your device's resolution. A PDF built for a 1236×1648 Kindle screen looks sharp on that Kindle; a generic one does not.
