How to read comics and manga on a Kobo
A practical guide to reading comics and manga on Kobo e-readers: the right format, how to transfer files, panel-by-panel reading, and the settings that matter.
Kobo makes some of the best e-ink readers for books, and with a little preparation they are excellent for comics and manga too. Unlike Kindle, Kobo reads EPUB natively and mounts as a plain USB drive, which makes getting comics onto it refreshingly simple. Here is how to do it well.
Use fixed-layout EPUB
Kobo's native format is EPUB, and for comics you want fixed-layout EPUB — each page is a full image at a set size, rather than reflowable text. This drops into your Kobo library with a cover and proper page turns, and sits alongside your books. Convert your CBZ, CBR or PDF to fixed-layout EPUB with the Kobo profile and you're most of the way there.
Panel-by-panel on smaller Kobos
On a compact Kobo (Clara, Libra), a full manga page is small. Smart conversion splits each page into its panels so every panel fills the screen — the same trick that transforms manga on a Kindle. On a large Kobo (Elipsa, Sage) whole pages are more readable, so panel splitting is optional there; try both and keep what you prefer.
Getting the file onto the Kobo
Connect the Kobo by USB and it appears as a drive. Copy the EPUB anywhere onto it, eject safely, and the Kobo indexes it into your library automatically. Older models with a microSD slot can also read from the card, which helps for big collections. If you use the Kobo desktop app or a cloud sync, you can add files that way too.
If a converted comic doesn't appear after copying, disconnect and let the Kobo finish 'Importing content'. Very large libraries can take a minute to index.
Manga reading direction
For Japanese manga, enable right-to-left reading order before converting, so panels and pages advance in the correct sequence. Manhwa, manhua and western comics read left to right — leave it off for those.
Grayscale keeps files small
Kobo screens are grayscale (except the colour models), so converting to optimized grayscale keeps files small without any visible loss, which matters when you're loading whole series. The Kobo profile handles resolution, grayscale and contrast for you.
