How to read webtoons and manhwa on an e-reader
Webtoons are one long vertical strip, which breaks on paged e-readers. Here's how to re-paginate a webtoon or manhwa into screen-sized pages for Kindle, Kobo and Boox.
Webtoons and vertical manhwa are designed for endless scrolling on a phone — one tall strip per episode. Paged e-readers don't scroll, so a raw webtoon either becomes an unreadably tall single 'page' or gets chopped at arbitrary points. The fix is to re-paginate the strip intelligently.
Why webtoons need special handling
A single webtoon episode can be tens of thousands of pixels tall. Fit that to a 6-inch screen and everything is microscopic. Cut it into equal slices and you'll split panels, faces and speech balloons right down the middle. Neither works.
Re-pagination at natural gaps
The right approach is to cut the strip only at the empty horizontal gaps the artist already left between beats — the natural breathing room between panels — and pack the segments into screen-height pages. This keeps every panel intact and preserves the pacing. Smart conversion detects those gaps automatically and never cuts through artwork.
Because webtoons are read top-to-bottom, reading direction doesn't apply the way it does to manga. Just convert with your device profile; the vertical flow is preserved as sequential pages.
Colour vs grayscale
Most webtoons are in full colour, which looks great on a phone or a colour e-ink device but flattens on standard grayscale e-ink. If you're reading on a grayscale Kindle or Kobo, the grayscale conversion with a contrast boost keeps it legible; on a colour e-reader or tablet, keep the colour.
Formats
Once re-paginated, a webtoon becomes a normal sequence of pages, so any output works: CBZ for comic apps, EPUB for the e-reader library, or PDF. Choose based on your device, exactly as you would for a regular comic.
